Spree killers are probably the most notorious and infamous of all multiple murderers, yet these criminals confuse and fascinate us more than any other. Kids going on the rampage have captured the headlines recently, but William Cruse was a sixty-one-year-old retired librarian when one day he snapped, killing six - including two policemen - then attempting to kill another 24. Nor is it possible to understand why the perpetrators kill, many of whom were killed by the police at the end of their sprees, and therefore unanswerable to their crimes. Those who survived are usually certified insane - famously when Brenda Spencer, who had killed two and wounded nine, was asked why she had done it, she simply replied 'I don't like Monday.' Spree Killers provides the horribly fascinating - sometimes enigmatic and inexplicable - but always terrifyingly gripping stories of 45 spree killers, from the first recorded incident in 1913 through to the most recent high school and shopping mall slaughters.

Great book! Covers dozens of events over the past several decades, but it's an easy read because each chapter is only 2 to 3 pages long. So it's a good book to read during a break or while commuting to work. The cover and title might freak out the weak minded, though! Well illustrated, too, without being gory.

Spree Killers The Stories of History Most Dangerous Killers Nigel Cawthorne Al Cimino 9781849164917 Books Reviews

This book is filled with several interesting stories of multiple murders. Some I have heard about, but didn't know the details. Other I had never heard of. He tells the story of the crime, the people involved, and the circumstances that drove the killers and the verdicts. It's easy to read, interesting, and well written with the exception of a few things.

This is written by an English man about US history and obviously does not live in the US. His writing shows he has very little context of true American culture and the book is targeted for "shock value" in the UK.

The words and phrases used are not always what you you might say in the US. It needs a bit of translation from Kings English to American English.

He goes into a 4 page rant on gun control that calls all Americans gun crazy and out of control. Not really appropriate in a book that is supposed to be filled with "facts", not opinion. This comes from a country that has been disarmed, and now has the likes of Piers Morgan representing them.

To show his ignorance on firearms he even refers to "stray sniper fire" during some riots. There is not such thing as "stray" sniper fire.

I would have given it more stars if his personal agenda wasn't so overt. If you like stories it's a good book. Ignore his personal opinion, it should be left to Vanity Fair.
This is an interesting book where the author records 49 spree killings(22 in America) that occured between 1913 and 2010.
Each killer gets 4 pages. On one page is a photograph of the killer while the frollowing 3 pages of text give an account of the killings,a list of the victims and a potted history of the killer.
Invariably the killer is a man,no motive is discernable and often it ends with his suicide at the end of the rampage.
An eexcellent book that reveals the dangers of the world we live in.
The title of the book simply explains what the book is all about. The chapters are set up in a way that makes clear sense--such as "The Outsiders", "Veterans", "Rebel Without a Cause", and "Sniper in the Tower" and so on. The book was written in 2009, so it is starting to get a bit dated already. It is written with a clearly British flair. Where the book fails to reach it's full potential are three areas 1. there are editing (spelling) errors in the book 2. some killers are only presented in a cursory fashion 3. there is VERY little information on the "outcome" of the killers (such as how long they were/have been in prison, etc) that did not end their own lives. This book can be better described as an introduction to the subject matter rather than a comprehensive review.
This book gives a play by play of a few of the better known spree killers. The book separates them by the circumstances related to their sprees, their race, sex and/or agenda. Was an interesting read. Sad at more than a handful of areas. Just to think of being shot dead while walking down the street... the thought is very unsettling.
Great book! Covers dozens of events over the past several decades, but it's an easy read because each chapter is only 2 to 3 pages long. So it's a good book to read during a break or while commuting to work. The cover and title might freak out the weak minded, though! Well illustrated, too, without being gory.
