Who knew having a baby could be so darn dangerous? Roslyn and Jacob Kent, members of Hollywood's jet set, had every luxury money could buy except the ability to conceive on their own. Seeking a little elite fertility treatment wasn't supposed to put them at the mercy of a psychopath. Do you have to love your slightly demented kid less because he is a monster genetically engineered by a mad man? Maybe that's just a reason to love him more...

Fortunate Monsters edition by Nancy Fulton Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
“She knew, Jacob knew, and surely this fast-food fertility specialist knew, if he were a real doctor, he’d be at Cedars or UCLA.”Outstanding novella, vaguely reminiscent of There’s Something About Kevin (but only vaguely. That was a horrible depressing book with no likable characters. This is an intense book but moderated with possibility). While I found myself wishing it were longer, the shorter length worked. All of the story arcs wrapped up neatly. No cliffhangers or teasers for the next book. This was an excellent stand-alone story. The author clearly did her research on the science as well.
The writing is crisp and engaging. NO sloppy errors in proofreading or grammar. Strong believable characters on multiple levels. The unexpected disability of one of the characters was a nice twist.
Strongly recommend.

Fortunate Monsters edition by Nancy Fulton Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Fry it? Boil it? No. Let's make Devil Eggs!!
Imaginative, ironic, terse. The story fairly flies from point A to Beyond Imagination. Nancy was well-versed in her subject, and floored me with its darker side. A fun, fast trip through an often esoteric subject.
Rosyln and Jacob Kent got more than they bargained for when they went looking for fertility treatment. A psychopathic doctor and a money hungry lawyer are behind this fictional story that might contain some truth along with the fiction. This was an interesting and enjoyable read.
I have never read a story or novel by Nancy Fulton. As a female myself, I’m often quick to judge female authors. So often do female authors make the female lead dependent on their relationships within the novels. They make the woman weak, needy, and usually to “in love” for my liking. That is not what Nancy did in this story at all. I was incredibly surprised by how strong of a character Roslyn was. She knew how she felt, and she stuck to it. When everyone was against her, she stuck to what she believed, fought for it, and this proved her to be a strong woman. Her strength proved to save her family, marriage, and countless other families.
Medical thrillers are a favorite genre for me, they are usually long novels, with hundreds of pages. I saw how short Fortunate Monsters was, and I didn’t believe that the story could develop and fully finish within just 130 pages. I was wrong. Fulton skips he unnecessary lengthy descriptions, the overly long details, and the in between stories, and hits right on the main story points. I appreciate the lack of “fluff” in the story.
I only have two complaints. The first is the photographs. I believe photographs inhibit the readers ability to imagine. So when you’re shown a picture of what the characters look like, your mind becomes so focused on seeing THAT person in every situation, that it takes away from the lure of the book. It makes it less of an experience.
My second complaint, was the beginning. Though I just mentioned how I liked the lack of over-description, I feel like the beginning lacked description or introduction at all. It was jarring and confusing, but once you get past the first 10 or so pages, the story moves beautifully, and quickly. I couldn’t take my eyes off of it!!
Fortunate Monsters is a very interesting book. It is also a very futuristic book. Rosyln and Jacob are parents that very much want children of their own. They are out of options for having biological children of their own. They go see a Dr. Moore a fertility doctor who creates biologically perfect children. They are required to sign a confidentially agreement to not share anything about the clinic that they conceived. The lawyer is in it for the money and the doctor does not want anyone to find out the specifics about his practice, especially the U. S. Government. There are many twists and turns in the very short book. It shows the future of having a family with genetically altered offspring. This is a great fast read. I love medical thrillers. It kept me interested throughout the book. I was able to read it in an afternoon and did not want to put it down.
This story starts out with Roslyn and Jacob Kent, who have everything money can buy except what they truly want, the ability to conceive on their own child, deciding which child they would like to have. Where do the rich go when they are in need of a child, a perfect child? Why Doctor Moore and his elite fertility treatment on the private island of Kokao. Having the zygote of a child that they knew would have all the traits they wanted and be healthy implanted should have given them everything they wanted. It wasn't supposed to put them all in danger, but I say who else but a psychopath would genetically engineer children.
I loved the attention to detail throughout this story and thanks to excellent editing and proofing the story flowed without interruption. The ending I felt needed a bit more work as it felt rushed and lacking the emotion that I experienced with the rest of the book. For me, it did not evoke the vivid imagery that the rest of the story did. For sequel's sake, in my opinion, it would have been nice if the good doctor had been left where he was residing near the end of the story. The cover with its idyllic imagery is but a glimpse into this book. It does not come close to emotional ride you will take with all the emotions, torment, and turmoil that the characters endure.
